Bennie Dimes

June 8, 1931 – January 16, 2026
Bennie "Dimes" Gallegos, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother left this world peacefully on January 14, 2026, and joined his loved ones who departed before him.
Bennie was born June 8, 1931, in Las Vegas, NM to Amado and Carmen Gallegos.
Bennie served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was a lifetime member and Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and American Legion. He was also a member of the VFW, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the Elks Club.
Bennie was very involved in the Las Vegas community as a small business owner. He also served as a city councilman.
Music was his lifeblood. Rarely was he seen without a guitar and music will always remind us of him. He loved his country and always flew the US Flag over his Ranchito.
Bennie lived life to the fullest and never met a stranger. His generosity was limitless.
Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nash Gonzales, his son-in-law, Lawrence Arguello, and many dear family members and friends.
He is survived by his children, Loretta Burger, Perla Arguello, Pete Gallegos, and Leroy Benavidez (Carla). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristen Burger (Scott), Kayla Moore (DonTrell), Zachary Burger (Trisha), Richard Arguello (Diana), Ethan Arguello, Desiree Mitchell (Aaron), and Eva Sena. He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, and his sister, Jenny Mora, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A Rosary will be recited Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Our Lady of Sorrows, 403 Valencia St., Las Vegas, NM at 6 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Dennis Garcia Monday, February 2, at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe with Full Military Honors.
