It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Cecilia "Chila" Salas, at the age of 74. While we grieve the loss of her physical presence, we celebrate a life marked by kindness, creativity, and unwavering support for all who crossed her path.

Chila, a lifelong resident of Las Vegas, New Mexico, passed away peacefully in her cherished family home surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, December 30, 2024.

Born Cecilia Roybal on January 10, 1950, to Juanita and Cruz Roybal Sr., Chila grew up with a heart full of compassion and a deep-rooted faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Her life was a living testament to love and service—feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, and providing warmth and comfort to people from all walks of life.

At the center of her world was her son, Fernando Roybal, whom she cherished and devoted much of her life to. As a mother, friend, and neighbor, Chila's unconditional love and belief in others transformed countless lives. She saw potential in everything, creating beauty from what others might overlook. Whether turning found materials into works of art or nurturing individuals in need, Chila's vision and care left an indelible mark.

Her garden was her sanctuary—a vibrant testament to her nurturing spirit and connection to creation. Surrounded by flowers, she found peace and joy, tending not only to plants but also to the souls of all who visited her.

Chila's kindness, artistic soul, and deep faith will forever inspire those she leaves behind. Her legacy of love and service lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her father Cruz Roybal Sr., mother Juanita Moncivaiz Roybal, sisters Mary Alice Roybal and Gloria Sena, nephew Mateo Sena, brother Cruz Roybal Jr., and her beloved pets, Messiah and Big Girl.

Chila is survived by her only son Fernando Roybal and fiancé Katherine Esquibel and daughter Lilyana; Paulette Roybal (Chris, Sam, and Christian and family), John Lucero and family, Therese Hayes and family, sisters Ofelia Martinez (Mary Ortega, Sophie Martinez and families), Mary Eva Maes (Waldron, Wayne, and April and families), Joan Montoya (Gabriel, Mona, Rico, Gabriella, Maricela, Amor, Bella, Jennifer, Juanita, Veronica, Chris and families), and brother Emilio Roybal (Isaac, Eloy, Warren, and families), sister-in-law Theresa Roybal (Mike, Glen, Rick, Viola and families) Danny and Martin Sena and families and many other relatives and friends, special friend Concha Aragon and family; along with treasured lifelong friend Julia Salazar who offered her time, kindness, and love to Chila without hesitation.
