Clara Alicia Maes, born August 12, 1946, in Wagon Mound to John Frank Montoya and Marjorie Montoya passed away on January 9, 2023 at the age of 76. Clara resided in Pecos, Taos and Las Vegas, New Mexico before settling in the Mora Valley as a long-time resident.

She was a devout Catholic, and a member of St. Gertrude's Parish. She graduated from Mora High School in 1963, and shortly after married Andres J.Maes, and expanded their family with three children. Clara was an active and well-known member of the community. She enjoyed playing music at Catholic Church services with her group Santa Teresita and listening to Northern New Mexico Spanish music groups. She also enjoyed sports in all forms from being a referee in volleyball throughout New Mexico to watching her Rangers and Rangerettes. She was an avid supporter of sports in the Mora Valley, Lobo Women's Soccer and the Dallas Cowboys. She managed Gertie's Restaurant, and Los Amigos Grocery Store as well as served 30 years on the Mora Valley Ambulance Service. Later in life Clara enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Clara was a kind, caring, funny, and generous person who opened her home to family and non-family alike providing a refuge in times of need.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Michelle A. Maes, brother-in-law

Phillip Chacon, her sister Barbara J. Whitehead, her brother Antonio Montoya, sister-in-law Monika

Montoya, Niece Melanie Montoya, Nephew Buddy Montoya and Nephew Cisco Montoya.

She is survived by sisters Rita Chacon, Gloria Loring (spouse Larry Loring), Jane Casias (spouse Mike Casias), her brothers John Frank Montoya (spouse Cathy Montoya), Joseph Montoya (spouse Jennifer Montoya), Donald Montoya, her daughter Sherry A. Serna (spouse Elmer F. Serna), son Ronald A. Maes (spouse Stephanie L. Schaeffer), granddaughter Amber C. Maes, grandson Johnathan F. Serna (spouse Annette Serna), grandson Russell Serna (partner Tammy Trujillo), granddaughter Karissa M. Serna, granddaughter Aspyn H. Maes, granddaughter Karlee A. Maes, and granddaughter Jordyn A. Maes, and eleven great-grandchildren. Clara is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and  Rosary will be recited on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Gertrude Church in Mora, NM

Funeral Mass will be conducted immediately following Rosary with Father Dale Craig S.O.L.T. serving as Celebrant.

Interment will follow at Maes Family Cemetery in Tramperos, NM.
