Connie Chavez, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2026, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. A lifelong caregiver and devoted public servant, Connie dedicated more than 40 years to serving the Las Vegas community and surrounding counties. As a nurse, she touched countless lives with her compassion and strength.
She started her education at the rural Trementina School and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1955. After a two-year stint at New Mexico Highlands University, she moved to Albuquerque where she earned her degree in Nursing.
Born on November 20, 1934, Connie spent over four decades as a registered nurse providing care, comfort, and dignity to her patients. She worked 30 years for the State of New Mexico Health Department and 10 years as a school nurse at Rancho Valmora. Known for her calm presence and gentle spirit, she was described as a steady hand in difficult moments.
Beyond her nursing career, Connie was a proud volunteer firefighter, serving the Cabo Lucero Fire Department community with courage and selflessness. She also worked as a coordinator for the Red Cross, organizing relief efforts and helping families in times of crisis. Whether responding to emergencies or quietly supporting those in need, Connie gave her time without hesitation.
She enjoyed gardening, spending time outdoors at her "cabin" in El Porvenir, quilting, crocheting, and listening to her beloved Cardinals on the radio.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents Guadalupe and Guadalupe Chavez; her sister Gertrude Chavez; and her brothers Orlando Chavez, Frank Chavez, and Lorenzo Chavez. Brother-in-Law Pete Henderson, Sister-in-Laws Delia Chavez and Brenda Chavez.
She is survived by sisters Irene Henderson of Brawley, California; and Patricia Ludi (Darwin) of Chula Vista, California; brothers Leroy Chavez (Cathy) of Cimarron, George Chavez of Albuquerque; Clarence Chavez (Geneva) of Rio Rancho; and Norman Chavez of Las Vegas. As well as, countless nieces and nephews, her many beloved friends and neighbors.
Special thanks to the staff of Legacy and Beehive Homes of Enchanted Hills in Rio Rancho, New Mexico who helped care for her during her final days.
Rosary will be recited on May 20, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Rogers Mortuary Chapel
Connie Chavez will be remembered as a tireless caregiver, a brave first responder, and a compassionate soul whose legacy of service will live on in the community she loved.
