Dan Manuel Gonzales, 92, a resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away peacefully on August 22, 2022 in the presence of his loving wife Ruby. He was preceded in death by his parents: Sophia and Rafael Gonzales; mother-father in-law Rebecca and Fidel Esquibel, daughter: Angelica Karim, son in-law Ali, siblings: Josephine, Frank, Ralph, Carmen, Tony, Johnny, Roy, Michael: nieces: Elizabeth, Lorraine, Janette; nephews: Donald, Steve, Joseph, James, Mark: in-laws Ernestine, Virginia, Joe, Ray, and Leo.
He was born in Las Vegas, NM on August 5, 1930. He graduated from Normal High School then joined the Army and served in the Korean Conflict, as a Master Sergeant forward observer in the 5th Regimental Combat Team B Battery 555th Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three (3) Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged and was very proud to serve in Korea with his brothers Ralph, Frank, Johnny, and Tony. He returned to Las Vegas and continued serving in the New Mexico National Guard. He worked as a commercial printer for the Las Vegas Optic and printed the book The Town That Wouldn't Gamble, and eventually worked as a printer for NMHU and retired. He took great pride in being a veteran and was very proud of his community. His family is and will always be proud of his bravery and the sacrifices he made for his country. He will be missed for his kindness, respectfulness, and empathy toward others, and for his great wealth of knowledge and history of Las Vegas.
He is survived by his wife Ruby, children Becky (Joe), Dan Jr., Carlos (Monique), and Carla (Alfonso III). He was very proud of his grandchildren (8) and their accomplished lives and his great grandchildren (13). He is survived by many cousins, nephews, and nieces: in-laws Francis G., Francis E. Paul, Marcella, and Kathy. Caregivers Felicia and Josette Ortiz.
Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, September 1st at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Interment, with full military honors, will be Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as Pallbearers Chris Gonzales, Alec Gonzales, Zachary Karim, Carlos J. Gonzales, Adrian Gonzales and Felicia Ortiz. Honorary Pallbearers are his remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Meadows Home as well as the staff at Alta Vista Regional Hospital for their dedication, compassion, and professionalism regarding the management of Mr. Dan Gonzales.
