Obituary

Darrel Huston, 88, formerly of Las Vegas, New Mexico, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Hereford, Texas. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Santa Rosa Baptist Church in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, with Pastor Beau Lamb officiating. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas.
Darrel was born on August 20, 1935, in Gibson City, Illinois, to Howard and Yvonne (Dodson) Huston. In 1954, Darrel attended New Mexico Highland University in Las Vegas, N.M., on a football scholarship; Darrel spent his whole life dreaming of becoming a cowboy.
In 1956 Darrel served in the United States Army. In 1959 he was honorably discharged. While Darrel was serving as a United States Veteran he married the love of his life, Geri Ordonez, in 1958, and they were married up until her death in 2012. Together they had a beautiful life and 2 wonderful sons.
Darrel attended 2 years of college and decided he wanted to fulfill his lifelong dream as a ranch cowboy and worked on several ranches. He found out that he would never be able to purchase his own ranch on a cowboy salary so he decided he would return to college for 6 more years at Washington State University, where he earned his D.V.M. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Darrell practiced for a year with Simplot Livestock Idaho with Baxter Black. Fifteen years later, after working on various ranches, Darrel was able to purchase and pursue his lifelong dream of owning and operating his own ranch.
In 1997 Darrel purchased his ranch in Cuervo, New Mexico. He worked and leased various ranches throughout the United States.
In 2020, Darrel moved to Hereford, Texas, with his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kathy, to be closer to his family. Darrel enjoyed listening to Big Band Era 40's music and old-time country music. He enjoyed socializing and he never met a stranger, he loved listening to people's life stories, cowboy poetry and traveling the world. Darrel's presence, smile and many other attributes will be missed dearly.
Those left to cherish his wonderful memories are his sons, Randy Huston and his wife Julianne of Rociada, New Mexico, and Tom Huston and his wife Kathy of Hereford, Texas; 2 grandchildren, Wyatt Huston and Hannah Huston Rivera; and 4 great-great grandchildren, Benjamin Maldonado, Jacob Rivera, Hunter Rivera and Tyler Howard Rivera.
Darrel is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Yvonne Huston and his wife, Geri Huston. You may go online and sign the guestbook at www.mendezandmullins.com
