Obituary

With hearts full of both sorrow and faith, we announce the passing of Eddie Mares, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who was called home to be with the Lord on March 19, 2026. Throughout every trial and illness he faced in life, Eddie never wavered in his faith in God. His strength, perseverance, and unwavering belief were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.

Eddie was born on November 28, 1950, to the late Pedro "Pete" Mares and Lilly Mares. He was a resident of Chacon, New Mexico, and a former resident of Buena Vista.

On September 8, 1973, Eddie was united in marriage to the love of his life, Cathy Mares. Together they built a beautiful life and shared 52 years of marriage, faithfully honoring the vows they made to one another.

Eddie had a generous heart and was always the one family and friends could count on for help, guidance, or simply a smile. Whether helping someone fix a problem, lending a hand when it was needed most, or sharing time with the people he loved, Eddie lived his life putting others first.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro "Pete" and Lilly Mares; his brothers Pete, Jerry, Juan, and Adonis Mares; his sister Magdalena Weber; his nieces Shirley Weber and Winter Weathers; and his father-in-law Adelaido "Gabby" Vigil.

Eddie is lovingly survived by his wife, Cathy Mares; his children Geraldine Montoya and husband Bruce, Kimberly Mares and boyfriend Ivan Vasquez, and Edward Mares and wife Priscilla.

He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Isaiah May, a very special grandson whom Eddie loved dearly and enjoyed spending countless hours with, often talking about and playfully teasing each other about Eddie's favorite football team, the Kansas City Chiefs; granddaughters Destiny Rivas and husband Julian, Trinity Mares and boyfriend Christian, Gabriella Mares, and Faith Mares; grandsons Elijah May, Joshua Montoya, and Caleb Mares; Step grandson Dominick Ortiz as well as his great-grandsons Ezio and Jeremiah Rivas.

Also surviving Eddie are his siblings Jesse Mares and wife Patty, Johnny Mares, Dora Mares, Virginia Maes, Julia Lovato, Lucy Mares, and Gloria Gallegos and husband Tommy. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Annie Vigil, along with many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
