Obituary

Editha was born on October 25, 1934, the first of two children to Carl Herman "Doc" Gellenthien, M.D., and Alice Editha Brown Gellenthien, at Valmora Sanatorium, a groundbreaking tuberculosis treatment center established in 1905 by her grandfather, William Townshend Brown, M.D., and operated by her father until his death in 1989.

In 1953, Editha graduated from New Mexico Highlands University at the age of 19, with degrees in Biology, Physics and French.  In 1954, Editha married "the love of her life," James Egger Bartley, and they lived in Las Vegas, N.M., where their three children were born, Sherrill Editha Bartley in 1955, Carlton James Bartley in 1957, and John Frederick Bartley in 1959.  In 1963, Jim and Editha moved the family to Gascon Ranch, north of Rociada, where they lived the rest of their lives, operating a working guest and cattle ranch until Jim's death in 1994.

During her life, Editha was a member of the Board of the New Mexico Highlands Foundation, New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, New Mexico Cowbelles, Rotary International, Delta Zeta, PEO, Mora Planning and Zoning Committee, Adelante Rescue Conservation and Development, New Mexico Dude Ranch Association, Red Cross, National Weather Service, David F. Cargo Public Library Board and American Tree Farm System.

Editha was also an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and thoroughly enjoyed writing her regular column, Palabras Pintorescas, for the Las Vegas Daily Optic.

Editha is survived by her children, daughter Sherrill (Chris), sons Carl (Lisa) and John (Tamera); granddaughters Courtney, Ashley (Eric) and Jennifer (Cole); grandson Lem (Julianna); and great grandchildren, Jack, Grace, Sawyer, Saylor, Samuel, Ember and Layne.

The Family expresses our heartfelt gratitude to our Anvoi Hospice "Dream Team" who provided the most compassionate care for our Mother:  Frank Gallegos, M.D., Maggie Mallette Rivera, Elaine Montaño, Serenity Martinez, Mary Addie Montoya and Corrine Esquibel.
