In the early hours of October 21, 2023, Gilbert "Port" DesChamps, 86, passed away in the comfort of his home in Roy, NM after a life well lived.

Gilbert was born in Roy, NM, the first child of Mary (DesChamps) Alewine on April 21, 1937, and raised by his grandfather Edward (Grampito) DesChamps on a family ranch west of Roy. Following his service in the US Army he married Theresa Gonzales of Roy, NM in 1963. The couple raised their family in Roy and Dalhart, TX. Gilbert held many jobs in his life to provide for his family. Gilbert often talked about working on ranches in the area, which he loved doing. Gilbert retired from the NMDOT.

Gilbert was an avid hunter, and even into his later years he enjoyed hunting with his two sons. He enjoyed gardening and grew a large garden in Sabinoso for many years. He had an easy smile, loved spending time with his family, and his favorite meal was cake and ice cream.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his mother Mary Alewine, and sisters Deluvina Trujillo and Lina Aragon, and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived by his wife Theresa DesChamps, by his daughter Esther Mitchell and her husband Matt, son Eddie DesChamps and wife Cindy, and son Johnny DesChamps; four granddaughters, Courtney Mitchell, Heather Mitchell, Tori Mitchell, and Jacqueline DesChamps; two sister Patsy Salazar and Barbara James; two brothers Wesley Alewine and Lowell Alewine; and many treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Rosary will be recited Friday, November 3 at 7p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Roy. A funeral mass will be held on November 4 at 10a.m. followed by interment at Roy Cemetery.  A meal will follow at the St George Parish hall.
Serving as pallbearers: Alex DesChamps, Antonio Aragon, Frank Arguello, Herman Martinez, Michael Frison, and Robert Trujillo.
Honorary Pallberars will be his four granddaughters: Courtney Mitchell, Heather Mitchell, Tori Mitchell, and Jacqueline DesChamps.
