Gilbert Reyes Vega, age 74, passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Hospital on June 13, 2023. He was born to Susie Vega and Francisco Vega on January 6, 1949, in Las Vegas New Mexico.

Gilbert resided in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where he had an extensive career in law enforcement. A career which began in 1977 and ended when he retired in 1998 as Chief of Police. He was also in the military from 1972 to 1976 serving in the US Army as a Sergeant. He served two years overseas in Korea and Turkey. Gilbert was also a proud member of the Second Infantry Division. He found great pride in serving his country and his community. After retiring, Gilbert spent his days at home with his wife, Tana Vega, and his many rescued animals. Gilbert often enjoyed arrowhead hunting with his son, Albert, his friend, Robert, and anyone else who was willing to offer their company. He was a very social and generous soul, having many friends and always willing to lend a helping hand to both people and animals.

Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents, Susie Vega and Francisco Vega, his wife, Tana Vega, and his children, Alberta Valdez and Albert Vega.

He is survived by his three siblings: Joe (Antoinette), Lucille, and Manuel (Pauline), his daughters: Annette (Kenny) and Susan (Mack), his son: Charlie, his grandchildren: Reyes, Kayla (Luke), Noah, Marissa (Christopher), Justin, Cristian, Brianna (Julio), Kendra (Charlie), Juliana, Serina, and Lee, his brother-in-law: Robert, his daughter-in-law: Clarissa, and his many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Rosary will be at Immaculate Conception at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20th, 2023. Funeral mass will also be at Immaculate Conception at 9am on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023 in Las Vegas, NM with Father Dennis Garcia as celebrant.

Cremation has taken place and burial of cremains will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Urn bearers will be Noah Vega, Reyes Vega and Robert Tarr
