Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce that Herman Lujan, age 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Cleveland, NM on January 29, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Herman was born on August 25, 1934, and leaves behind a legacy of love, honor, service, and kindness.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto Lujan Sr. and Alicia Lujan; brothers Ted, Ernesto, and Roy Lujan; sister Patricia Lujan; sister-in-law Angela Romero; and nephews Ramon Lujan, Brian Lujan, and Gabriel Van Fleet.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Lorraine Lujan of the family home in Cleveland; his adoring daughters: Diane Trujillo (George) of Cleveland, Cathy Needleman (Art) of Albuquerque, and Yvette Hall (Cory) of Albuquerque. Herman is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Ryan Lujan, JJ Trujillo, Chelsea Bustos (Rick), Zion Hall and Zoie Hall; his great-grandchildren: Alex, Brayden, Brandon, and Braxton; Sisters: Ursula Vigil (Charlie) of Mora, Olivia Sandoval (Anthony) of Albuquerque; and brother Lorenzo Lujan of Tramperos; Sisters-in-law: JoAnn Cassidy and Dorothy Lujan of Cleveland; Godsons: Jeremy Lujan and Victor Olivas; Goddaughter Sarah Fahey; special friends Fidel Trujillo, Sr., John Sanchez, and Bruce Cordova; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbors, and friends.

Herman learned the value of a strong work ethic at an early age, working at his father's sawmill. There, he also became a skilled truck driver, hauling logs to Albuquerque. Herman was very proud that Lujan Lumber employed many people from Chacon, Holman, Cleveland and surrounding areas. Herman is also fondly recalled for his many years of dedicated service to the Mora Independent School District as a
school bus driver, building lasting bonds with students who rode Bus #5 between Mora and the communities of Cleveland, Encinal, and Tramperos. Herman was also a successful businessman, owning and operating a meat-cutting business for many years.

Herman Lujan was well-respected across the region, serving his community as a Mora County Commissioner from 1976-1980, Trustee of Mora/San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Board Member of Helping Hands, Inc., and Mayordomo of La Acequia del Medio.

Of all the hats he wore in terms of work, Herman genuinely enjoyed being a rancher most of all. He enjoyed God's creation in nature, talking local and national politics over a hot cup of coffee with his friends, and joking around with his loved ones. His sense of humor and generosity endeared him to so many people and he will be missed.

A lifelong Catholic, Herman was a member of St. Gertrude's Parish in Mora. Recitation of the Rosary will be on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Dale Craig, S.O.L.T. serving as Celebrant. Cremation has taken place with private burial to follow.
