Joaquin J. Maes a longtime resident of Cleveland, New Mexico, recently passed away following a battle with cancer on November 15, 2025.
Born in Mora, New Mexico on December 24, 1950, he was the youngest son of Andres D Maes and Lucianita V Maes.
He worked in mining and as a law enforcement officer in New Mexico and Nevada. Upon returning to Mora valley he spent his time observing elk and other wildlife from the comfort of his back porch. He also enjoyed drawing, creating Native American inspired jewelry, dream catchers and beaded charms.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Anna LaPore and Ernestine (Tina) Maes, his brothers, Andres Maes and Tony Maes and son in law Brian Thompson (Jackie)
He is survived by his children Jackie "JJ" Thompson w* (Brian) Indiana, Joaquin "Jerome" Maes, South Dakota and Amanda Maes, Wyoming. Also survived by His Brothers Benito (Arlene), Johnny (Betty) and Mike. His sisters Julia Martinez (Thomas), Mary Jane Trujillo and Martha Ray (Charles).
Graveside service will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025 at 2:00pm at Maes Family Cemetery in Cleveland, NM.
