Joe Ernest Chavez, "Uncle Joe" as he was known to most, was born on August 31, 1931, and passed away on January 9, 2024, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was a long-time resident of Las Vegas, but was originally from Clayton, New Mexico. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Mrs. Rosabelle Chavez and his Mother Eloise Chavez. Although the couple did not have any children, they were surrounded with love by several nephews and nieces who considered them their second parents. He is survived by his cousin Julie Herrera, his special friend Erlinda Gallegos, numerous nieces, nephews, and acquaintances.

Joe worked as an Air Traffic Controller at the Las Vegas Municipal Airport for 36 years. Joe also served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from August 1950 to August 1954 in the 4676th Air Defense Group where he received the United Nation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Joe was known by all to have a smile on his face, and an infectious personality that resonated with the Community. He was an avid reader, and loved to take classes at the Community Center, Luna Community College an LV Senior Center where he did beading classes, Tai Chi, and water aerobics.

A Rosary will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church starting at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. The burial will then take place on January 24, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military honors. Serving as Pallbearers will be; Charles Martinez, Diego Martinez, Kenneth Wise, Randy Wise, Steve Martinez, and Marty Gallegos.
