Obituary

John Albert Abreu of Las Vegas, NM peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the age of 65.

John attended elementary and middle school at West Las Vegas. He played for La Plaza Little League. John graduated from Mora High School in 1976. While in school he played basketball and was a regional champion in baseball for the Mora Rangers. He attended NMHU briefly after high school before moving to Grants to work construction. In 1978, he moved to Albuquerque, NM, worked construction, attended TVI, and got married. A year later he became a father for the first time with a daughter; then again 16-months later with another daughter. John loved playing softball and basketball with his brothers, cousins, and friends. He coached Henry's Shoe Service softball team with the city adult league. This team would play in tournaments and get into mischief along the way. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and elk hunting. He loved watching his daughters play sports while is school. The family would spend a lot of time camping at Murphy Lake. In 1990 he medically retired from the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Still, he was able to travel to Colorado, Las Vegas, NV, Monterey, CA, Miami, FL, Hawaii, and Cancun. He treasured visiting and staying at his fathers' cabin at Murphy Lake. John loved attending high school basketball and football games. He attended the State Tournament and Stu Clark Tournament every year. He was proud to help coach The Rattlers little league team and his great nephew, Cruz. Over the years he enjoyed watching western movies, attending Isotopes games, Lobo games, concerts, movies, and comedy shows with his daughters. He loved the Miami Dolphins. In 2014 and saw them play in Colorado against the Denver Broncos with his brother. In 2018, he was excited to witness the "Miracle in Miami" game from the 50-yard line against the Patriots in Florida with his daughters. John got out on the field, watched the team warm up, visited The 72 Club VIP Lounge and got a glimpse of Dan Marino. His most recent adventure was camping with family at his brothers' ranch near Mineral Hill where he enjoyed conversations around the campfire and saw a lot of elk.

John was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Mary Louise Abreu. He is survived by his beloved cats: Bubba Dude, DJ, GW, Mama Boots and Sarge; children: Andrea and Nicole, whom he shared with former spouse, Noyola; siblings: Jim (Pam), Ernest "Bobo", Bob (Sylvia), Don (Ida), Rick (Denise), Loretta Abreu-Martin (Crystal), and Michael (Michelle); uncle Edward Leland Abreu; uncle Rudy Wildenstein (Irene); aunt Frances Neatherlin (John); and his good friend Chris Gonzales (Kathy). He was loved by his many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews (whom he had a special and unique relationship with), cousins, and friends. Thank you to all the caregivers who assisted John through the years. His presence will be missed but his spirit will continue in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rosary will be recited on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 7:00pm. Funeral mass will be conducted on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 9:00am both services will be conducted at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM with Father Rob Yaksich as celebrant.

Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred at the Abreu Family Cemetery next to his parents in Rayado, NM (Cimmaron, NM) at a later date. Memorial Fundraiser for John A.
