John Lance, a beloved educator and devoted community member of Wagon Mound, New Mexico has passed away. Known for his kind heart and unwavering dedication to others, John leaves behind a legacy of service, learning, and love. For many years, John served as an English teacher at Wagon Mound Schools. He was far more than an instructor; he was a mentor who took genuine joy in seeing his students succeed. His passion for literature and language left an indelible mark on generations of students who remember him not only for his lessons but for the genuine care he showed for their futures. He never forgot his childhood training in Catholic school in Pennsylvania.

Outside of the classroom, John was a man of action within his community and his faith. He believed in stewardship and spent countless hours working to beautify his surroundings. He was instrumental in repainting the church and was a driving force behind improving the parish hall, ensuring that these gathering places remained vibrant for his neighbors. An avid gardener, John found peace in the earth, nurturing his plants and flowers with the same patience he gave his students.

Above all, John was defined by his capacity to love. He was a man who cared deeply for everyone around him, always putting the needs of others before his own. This devotion was most evident in his role as a father; John was a tireless and loving caretaker for his son, providing for him with total devotion for as long as he was physically able.

John has two surviving children, Steven, and Angie Lance, and Johnny, who preceded him. He is also survived by his siblings and his special friend, Robert Mondragon. His loss is also felt by the many students and neighbors whose lives he touched.

John’s warmth, his strength, and his commitment to the people of Wagon Mound will be deeply missed. He lived a life of purpose, and his memory will continue to bloom in the gardens he planted and the minds he helped shape.

Graveside service is scheduled on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 12:00pm at the Wagon Mound Cemetery in Wagon Mound, New Mexico. He and his son will be interred together.
