Obituary

It is with a sad heart that we announce that Lloyd Andy Ellis passed from this earthly life, after a long battle with cancer, to join his loving wife in their heavenly home on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Lloyd Andy Ellis was born to Andrew Ellis and LaPrele Pew Ellis on April 19, 1947, in Globe Arizona. Lloyd grew up living in multiple places in New Mexico and Arizona. His father worked for the Forest Service, so Lloyd had many opportunities to be a part of the great outdoors and develop a love and respect for nature. He learned to hunt and fish by going on many excursions with his dad.

After graduating from high school, Lloyd started attending Highlands University in Las Vegas NM. That is where he met the love of his life, Rosita Gonzales. Lloyd and Rosita married on September 24, 1966, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, NM.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife Rosita, his parents Andrew and LaPrele Ellis, his maternal and paternal grandparents, and one granddaughter, Samantha.

He is survived by his daughters Marlene Cowans and Alberta Ellis; his sons Jason Ellis (Stephanie) and Brian Ellis (Nanise); his sister Elanna Ellis Jackson (Richard) and twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two nieces, and five nephews.

Shortly after their wedding Lloyd and Rosita moved to San Diego, CA where Lloyd was stationed with the US Navy. After several months, they relocated to Oakland, CA as Lloyd was assigned to the Naval Hospital there. In December 1967 when Lloyd was ordered to Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division, Rosita returned to Las Vegas and lived with her parents. While Lloyd was in Vietnam, their eldest daughter Marlene Ellis Cowans was born. Upon Lloyd's return stateside in December 1968, he and Marlene met for the very first time. The family then moved to Springfield, MO where Lloyd was assigned to the Marine Reserve Center until his discharge in July 1970.

Because both Rosita and Lloyd had attended NM Highlands University in previous years, they moved back to Las Vegas NM to resume their studies and live close to Rosita's family. Lloyd graduated from Highlands University with an MA in Psychology and worked at the New Mexico State Hospital until he retired in November 30, 2001. Because of Lloyd's training in the military, he was able to pursue medical employment opportunities by getting his LPN, working in the emergency room at the hospital and working for the Office of Medical Investigations as a Medical Investigator. Outside of his work life, on any given evening, you could find Lloyd behind the plate umpiring Junior Varsity and Varsity softball games and baseball games. He knew the game and the rules. . . not many spectators were brave enough to question the calls he made!!! Lloyd and Rosita remained in Las Vegas where they raised their family and lived out their golden years.

Lloyd was a proud Veteran and instilled a love for our country in all his offspring. Many of them have served their country in the military and in law enforcement. His family meant everything to him, and he was always proud of their accomplishments and supported them in their endeavors. Lloyd's sense of humor and ability to remember details and tell stories from his past experiences will be missed by his family. He was a strong willed but loving man with a heart of gold. For him, "once a friend always a friend" was his motto.

Arrangements are entrusted to and under the care of Rogers Mortuary 600 Reynolds Ave, Las Vegas, NM 87701, 505-425-3511 or 1-800-479-3511.
