Obituary

Loren Roe Mayer, 72, of Roy, New Mexico passed away December 23, 2022.

Born in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He was the son of the late George Allen and Elsie Gates Mayer of Buckland, Massachusetts. He grew up on Riverwind Farm in Buckland, later working as a logger and sawyer on the farm.

He taught at Mohawk Trail Regional High School, his alma mater, having graduated in 1968. He graduated from Drew University in New Jersey, where he was on the fencing team. He attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst: University of Texas, Austin, earning his doctorate in exercise physiology, of which he was very proud and Texas A+M, where he completed his post-doctorate in cardiology and was on the teaching staff of the medical school in its beginning years.

Loren, who was known to many as "Doc", returned home to Buckland after earning his post-doctorate. There he was the logger and sawyer on the family farm. In Buckland, he and the mother of his children, Mary C. Soto, began their family. The four of them later moved to Solano, New Mexico. It was in Harding County New Mexico that "Doc" truly felt at home.

He taught High School Science at Roy Schools, was a bus driver, an EMT, a rancher, an avid stippling artist and painter, a cowboy poet who once toured with Michael Martin Murphy. "Doc" was a man who had his own mind and style and never swayed from who he was. He wore many hats in his lifetime, but when asked what part of his life meant the most to him, it was being a father and a grandfather. He loved sharing all his experiences and knowledge with them and always looked forward to the time he shared with them.

"Doc" will be greatly missed by many. And he will be remembered by everyone who has known him!

He is preceded in death by his son and best friend Dusty Mayer. He is survived by his grandchildren, Jasper, Parker, and Scarlett Mayer, Connor and Garrett May, daughter Molly (Joey) May, daughter-in-law Jessica Mayer, first wife and friend Mary (Omar) Soto, sister Rebecca (Merejildo Jr.) Gutierrez, brother Steven (Virginia) Mayer, many nephews, and nieces, along with many friends.

We would like to thank everyone at Autumn Blessings, who with their love and care, made the past two years of his life safe, comfortable, and fulfilling.

While no funeral service is currently scheduled, a celebration of life ceremony may be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions in Loren's memory be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
