Obituary

Lorenzo Arturo Leger December 5, 1943 – October 15, 2026

In the peace of Christ and with trust in the Resurrection, the family of Lorenzo Arturo Leger announces his passing on October 15, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on December 5, 1943, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Lorenzo was a devoted Catholic whose life was rooted in humility, generosity, and a steadfast commitment to serving others. He lived his faith quietly but fully, always placing the needs of family, friends, and community before his own. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by the love and prayers of those closest to him.

A proud fourth-generation blacksmith, Lorenzo carried forward a distinguished family tradition, advancing the craft with skill, creativity, and deep reverence. Over the decades he became an award-winning New Mexico artist, celebrated for his metalwork, religious iconography, and traditional folk art. His work—created in nearly every medium imaginable—was admired by countless people across the state and beyond. Among the more unique moments of his artistic life was being asked in the late 1970’s to forge a metal cross for the production of the horror movie The Evil—a task captured in close-up shots of his hands at the anvil, reflecting both his craftsmanship and the timeless artistry he inherited from generations before him.

Lorenzo’s metalwork can be found in homes, churches, and public spaces throughout New Mexico, including installations at the New Mexico Governor’s Mansion. He received numerous awards at the New Mexico State Fair Hispanic Arts exhibitions, honoring both his creativity and his dedication to the craft. Among his most recognized pieces is his 1994 painting of the Santo Niño de Atocha, chosen as the featured cover art for the 1994–95 New Mexico Official Visitor Guide, bringing his devotion and artistry to audiences nationwide.

In addition to his artistic accomplishments, Lorenzo—together with his brother Joseph and two sons—built the family home in Sapello, New Mexico. In doing so, he created a place filled with love, prayer, and the joy of gatherings that spanned generations. To those who knew him, Lorenzo reflected the quiet holiness of a man who recognized every talent as a gift from God and every person as a blessing. His gentle nature, warm humor, and unwavering humility left lasting impressions on everyone he met. He never failed to let his children and grandchildren know how proud they made him, even though he would never admit that their accomplishments were rooted in the values, strength, and example he lovingly instilled in them.

Lorenzo was preceded in death by his parents, Prudencio and Maria Dolores Leger; his brother, Joseph P.; his beloved wife, Michele; his son, David; and grandchildren Katlyn and Carlos. May they rejoice together in the presence of the Lord.

He is survived by his children, Michael Leger (Windey) and Lori LaBar (Josh); his grandchildren, Talia Leger, Stephen Leger, Ashleigh LaBar, and Dominic Leger; his sister Pauline; brothers George (Verna) and John (Susan); and many beloved nieces and nephews. His family remains profoundly grateful for the faith, love, and example he imparted throughout his life.

Lorenzo leaves behind a legacy of faith, humility, and devotion to family and tradition. His hands shaped beauty, and his faith shaped lives. His family takes comfort in knowing that he has been welcomed into the loving arms of Christ, whom he served with quiet fidelity throughout his earthly journey.

A Rosary will be held on November 19, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on November 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish. Burial will follow at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Mission Church and Cemetery in Sapello, New Mexico.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
