Obituary

Louie Olivas was welcomed into heaven on April 1, 2022 at the age of 96.

Louie Olivas was born in Las Vegas in 1925 to Joe and Pablita Olivas.

Along with his two brothers he worked in his parents' Olivas Grocery at a young age.  At the start of World War II he traveled to the Bay Area to work in the shipyards until he volunteered in the U.S. Navy.  He served on the Battleship U.S.S. Lycoming.   After the war he moved to the Los Angeles area, married and raised a family.

In 1961 when his father became ill, he returned to New Mexico to help run the family grocery business.   In partnership with his brother, Ernest, they operated an expanded and renovated Olivas 7-11 Market.

Almost immediately he involved himself in trying to improve and beautify the community including projects to clean and landscape Our Lady of Sorrows parish and later landscaping the new Veteran's Memorial Park as well as serving on a special soil and water conservation district committee. He also served as West Las Vegas Councilman, member of the Las Vegas Consolidation Committee and was appointed to the N.M. State Parks and Recreation Commission by Governor Cargo.

After retiring from the grocery market business, he started Lagunas Nursery and Landscaping business. This allowed him to continue to serve his community and indulge in his passion for landscape design. His dedication and love for his community will be an example for future generations to come.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Joe Olivas and Ernie Olivas.

He is survived by his wife: Rose Olivas of the family home in Las Vegas, NM; sons: Arthur Olivas of Santa Fe, NM; Alfred Olivas (Vickie) of Algodones, NM; Andrew Olivas (Nancy) of Las Cruces, NM; daughter: Anita Montoya (Raymond) of Peoria, AZ; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
