Lucas Joe Lujan, age 88, a long-time resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at his home. He was born in Cañoncito de Las Manuelitas on November 15, 1935 to Meliton Lujan Sr. and Abenicia Lujan. He was united in marriage to the love of his life Jane on May 25, 1957 in Pecos, NM. Lucas was a devout catholic and a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM. Over the years he served as a Mayordomo, a Cursillisto, a member of the Parish Council, Holy Name Society, Comunidad Eclesial de Base, St. Vincent de Paul and was the director of the Our Lady of Rosary Choir for over 40 years. He served in the Army National Guard as a Gunnery Sergeant and a Tank Commander during his 9-year enlistment. He began working at Maloof's Grocery where he was employed for 15 years, after which time he moved on to work at Great Western/BTU Building Materials and retired from there after over 45 years of service. Lucas was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and enjoyed watching sports. He was a do-it yourselfer with knowledge of many different trades. His hobbies included camping, stream-fishing, hiking, traveling to different places and building things.
He was preceded in death by his parents Meliton Lujan Sr. and Abenicia Lujan; son Joseph "Luj" Lujan; brother Meliton Lujan Jr. and wife Alice; brother Armando Lujan and wife Mary Louise; brother Gene Lujan; sister Lucy Aragon and husband Johnny; mother-in-law Julia Chavez; sisters-in-law Josie Sandoval and Florence Chavez; nephew Lester Aragon; and godson Rodney Barela.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Jane C. Lujan; children Leroy Lujan, Joanne Lujan (Danny Palomino), Raymond Lujan, Joyce Garcia and husband Martin; grandchild Soleciana Garcia, grand-puppy Estrella; brother Dennis Lujan and wife Mary Jean; sister-in-law Antonia Lujan; brother-in-law Seferino Sandoval; Uncle Albert Espinoza and wife Dolly; Godchildren Rose Lujan, Cathy Lujan, Suzette Archuleta, Christella Chavez, Eugene Martinez Jr., Mary Jo Lujan, Sandra Solis, Veronica Montaño and numerous nephews, nieces, family and friends.
Rosary services will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at 7:00 pm with Funeral services to follow on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 9:00 am. All services will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM, with Fr. Rob Yaksich as celebrant. Interment will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM with the following serving as Pallbearers: Gene Lujan Jr., Eugene Martinez Jr., Ray Sandoval, Aaron Lujan, Ryan Aragon, Christopher Lujan, Gerard Lujan and Matthew Lujan. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be all remaining nephews, nieces and godchildren.
