Lucy
Otero
September 17, 1930 – June 18, 2025
Lucy Otero passed away quietly at home on Wednesday June 18th. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church of Las Vegas, New Mexico. She is survived by her 6 children: Doris (Max) Montoya of Las Vegas, Michael (Elizabeth) Griego of Eugene, Oregon, Paul Richard Griego of Las Vegas, Cathie (John) Havlina of Tacoma, Washington, Joyce Griego of Las Vegas, and Chrissie Vigil and fiancé (Pete) of Albuquerque; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great- grandchildren.
Lucy was a devoted mother, caring for her children and raising them independently until her second marriage to Manuel Otero. No matter what was happening she projected an air of positivity. She loved to dance and sing in the kitchen as she was cooking. Children often raided her refrigerator. All were welcome at her table. Who would have guessed that she rode an Indian Motorcycle in her youth? She was a daredevil in her youth.
In the spring and summer, she grew lovely roses in her yard as well as planting vegetable gardens.
She loved to travel. She traveled all over the United States including Hawaii. Her greatest travel story was visiting the Holy Land, Jerusalem.
During the winter months Lucy loved sewing quilts and for those lucky few, she made special baby blankets. She was not one to sit idle.
Lucy also dedicated time to helping Elders get to their doctors' appointments as well as taking them meals from time to time. She was humble and private about her generosity. She was not one to brag about her kindness. Her children learned generosity and dedication from her example.
She is preceded in death by her husband Manuel Otero, her son David Griego and her parents Carlos and Agripina Sanchez.
