Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our cherished mother, Lugarda N. Jaramillo (Lou).  She was born to Nocario and Adela Padilla on September 2, 1932 in Trementina, New Mexico.  On July 11, 1954, she married Adreien F. Jaramillo.  66 years of marriage and worldly everlasting love ended on July 2, 2020 with the passing of Adreien, her beloved Jen.  Together they raised six sons and a daughter. She is survived by 29 grandchildren and 48 great-grand- children.

Lugarda was an early childhood teacher for the Las Vegas City Schools and later opened her own daycare.  Eventually the daycare, which was still run as a classroom, was filled with her grandchildren.

Lugarda didn't drive until later in life.  This did not deter her from going to mass or the grocery store with her children following behind.  Often other children in the neighborhood or cousins from afar would join in. Some of them have said they learned about spirituality because Lou led the way. She was a Eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception Church.

Freight train drifters on summer days scrambled off piles of coal to beg a serving of food. Lugarda did not turn them away when they came knocking.  God's people she'd say. Saturdays were busy with baking, cooking and rolling out piles of tortillas.

By and by, her full life was interrupted by dementia and her once happy life was not even a memory.  In her own words, she described her illness, "I don't have color in my eyes anymore, I'm a wild animal." Gradually, she began to forget the songs she sang to her grandchildren, her favorite being you are My Sunshine. Her prayers were the one thing that were not forgotten easily, her final words being a prayer.

Adreien and Lugarda walked daily and are remembered for holding hands as they walked.

Lugarda is preceded in death by her spouse, Adreien, her parents, her sons Don and Michael.   her son-in-law Ben F. Marquez, grandson, Jeremy Marquez. Granddaughters, Donna Montoya and Destiny Jaramillo.. Also, great- grandchildren Alizar Jaramillo, Emerson Jaramillo and Angel Garcia.  Siblings Jose Melecio Padilla, Perfecto Padilla, Miguel Padilla, Emma Baca, Zoilo Padilla.

Surviving Lugarda is daughter, Clarabel Marquez; sons Phillip (Martha); Celestino (Annabelle) Joseph Albert Jaramillo(Mae); Adrian J. Jaramillo (Francine).Daughter-in-law, Virginia Jaramillo.  Sister: Virginia Martinez, Brothers Ralph and Simon Padilla.  Sister-in laws, Antonia Luke (Gene) and Rose Opp (Steve).
