Margarita Romero, our beloved sister and aunt who devoted her life to taking care of others, died on Tuesday night at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque following a fall earlier this month. She was 92.
Her last days were spent surrounded by her sister, nieces, nephews and close friends whose lives she deeply touched, including the many people she took care of when they were children. She was a lifelong Catholic whose faith was unwavering.
Born on Nov. 5, 1933, to Clarita Almanzar and Federico Romero in Ventanas, N.M., Margarita was the second oldest of four daughters. Her youngest sister, Victoriana, died shortly after birth. Margarita lived in Los Vigiles for most of her life.
Even as a child, she was always looking after her younger sister, Aurelia, and later was a caregiver to her nieces, nephews and others, instilling in them the importance of faith and kindness. She was frequently singing religious hymns like “Bendito,” and her gingerbread cakes, galletas and tortillas were legendary.
She was a beautiful soul who many adopted as their honorary “Tia.”
Margarita is preceded in death by her mom, dad and infant sister. She is also preceded in death by her sister Elvira Aragon, brothers-in-law Arquilino Aragon and Eloy Salazar and niece Viola Aragon.
She is survived by her sister Aurelia Salazar and her cherished caregivers and nieces Priscilla Elizabeth Salazar, of Los Vigiles, and Yolanda Salazar, of Albuquerque. Other nieces and nephews include: Micaela Little, her husband, Ryan, and their baby, Logan Francis of Chicago; Antonio Salazar of Albuquerque; Arquilino Aragon, his wife, Larilinda, and their children, Autiaunna, Shishayla and Onecimo, of Upper Fruitland; Venancio Aragon, of Farmington; Theresa LeBlanc and her daughters Alana and Mikelle, of Los Lunas; Raul Aragon, his wife, Misty, and their children, Emiliana Aragon and Jenson Bishop, of Albuquerque; Jacqueline Griego and Eugene Gonzales, and their children Ayden and Jordan Gonzales of Albuquerque; Alex Aragon (partner Frank Velasquez) and children Elijah and Enzo Maestas of Los Lunas; Ivana Aragon of Rio Rancho; Victoria, husband, Matt, and Gabrielle Aragon, of Bozeman, Mt.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29, also at the IC church, with the Rev. Dennis Garcia as Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Los Vigiles Cemetery.
