Maria Elena Martinez

(January 8, 1965 - July 24,2022)

Maria Elena "Maudie" Martinez was welcomed into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 24, 2022. She was a devoted daughter, caring sister, loving mother, and proud grandmother.

Maria Elena was born on January 8, 1965, to Jose Leroy and Mary Judy Martinez of Las Vegas, NM. Maria Elena is preceded in death by her mother, Mary Judy Martinez; sister, Therese Martinez-Dankbar; and brother, Robert Martinez.

She is survived by her father, Jose Leroy Martinez; daughters, Asia Perazich (Milan) and Jordan Martinez (Luke); son, Daylan Romero; grandchildren, Mica and Zia Perazich; former husband and father of her children, Rene Romero; sisters, Cathy Martinez and Janet Martinez-Pittaway; brother-in-law, Robert Dankbar; and abundant nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She graduated from West Las Vegas High School in 1982 and received her bachelor's degree from Highlands University in 1990. She taught for nearly 20 years and impacted many students' lives with her creative teaching style, infectious energy, and relatability. Maria Elena never lost her love of learning, and at age 53, she received her master's degree in rehabilitation counselling from Highlands University. In her last years, she was a devoted caregiver to her mother and father.

Maria Elena had a passion for art and practiced it through weaving, photography, and painting. She had a stunning smile and a remarkable ability to make friends. While Maria Elena was known for a bit of a feisty streak at times, she had a compassionate and infectious spirit.

Rosary will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at 6:00 pm at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM.

Funeral mass will be on Monday, August 1, 2022, at 9:00 am at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with Father Rob Yaksich as celebrant.

Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM with the following serving as pallbearers Daylan Romero, Nathan Martinez, Luke Martinez, Milan Perazich, Louis Delgado and Ryan Martinez-Evans.
