Maria Simonita Romero died peacefully on the morning of October 9, 2024. Simonita, as her family and friends called her, had been sick for several months and Our Lord finally decided to take her home to be with her sisters and mother and father, whom she loved dearly. She was a resident of La Vida Buena Healthcare in Las Vegas, NM at the time of her death.
Simonita was born and raised in Mora, NM on October 17, 1932. She was a graduate of St. Gertrude's High School. Soon after graduation she entered the St. Joseph's Carmelite Monastery in Seattle, Washington.
She remained a faithful servant of the Carmelite community for over 40 years. In the late 80s, she returned to her family home in Mora to care for her elderly mother. She remained in Mora until she had to leave to reside at La Vide Buena due to her declining health.
Simonita was a beautiful soul full of the Holy Spirit. She was such a loving and giving person. She never complained about anything. At the end of her life when she was so sick, she never complained about having any pain or discomfort. She was always thankful for anything and everything that was done for her. She thanked God for being taken care of at La Vida Buena. She said the staff was always good to her and she enjoyed having good meals every day. She also enjoyed the many activities that were available. She especially enjoyed praying the daily rosary that was on the radio every afternoon. The family wishes to thank the staff and all her caregivers who made her feel loved and comfortable during her stay there.
Simonita is preceded in death by her mother and father, Antonia and Celso Romero, and her sisters, Tillie Trujillo and Stella Sacoman. She is survived by her nephews Steve Martinez and wife Teresa, Michael Martinez and wife Josephine, Matt Martinez and Lily Archuleta, and by her niece, Anita Roybal and husband Deacon Eloy. She leaves behind many great-nieces and -nephews and many friends from the parish of St. Gertrude.
Maria Simonita was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Gertrude Parish in Mora. Her life will be celebrated by Fr. Paul Grala, S.O.L.T (Celebrant) at a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, October 14, 2024 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Mora, NM. Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be at 9:30 am, which will be followed by mass. She will be laid to rest after the mass at the Roybal Family Ranch in Chacon, NM with the following serving as pallbearers will be her three nephews, Michael, Steve, and Matt Martinez; and 2 of her great nephews, Brian Pacheco and Ted Sandoval. A reception at the St. Gertrude Parish Hall will follow the burial in Chacon.
