Melaquias (Mel) Abenicio Aragon, age 85, passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 at his home in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was born in San Ignacio, New Mexico on April 7, 1938 to the late Melaquias Aragon and Reginita Padilla Aragon. He was a long time resident of Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Mel was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked for 40 years. After his retirement Mel went on to finish his college degree at Highlands University. Walking was a favorite pastime. He walked for his health, but mostly so he could visit with his neighbors. He loved spending time with family, reading, golfing, and watching sports. He especially loved watching the University of New Mexico Lobos football and basketball games. He was a very joyful person, who always had a joke or a story to share.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Melaquias and Reginita Aragon; brothers and sisters: Bernabe Aragon, Helen Dimas, Gilbert Aragon, Bernice Garcia, Pita Almanzar, Tina Singletary, Dorothy Maestas; and his son: Aaron Aragon.

He is survived by his wife: Catherine Aragon of the family home in Las Vegas, NM; sons: Jason Aragon and wife Loralie of Albuquerque, NM; Fabian Aragon and wife Dannelle of Albuquerque, NM; Adam Aragon and wife Pandi of Cleveland, NM; Mel Aragon and wife Vickie of Chickamaunga, Georgia; daughter: Angel Herbers and husband Greg of Oro Valley, AZ; grandchildren; Antonella Aragon (Jason), Jaya Aragon (Jason), Jodelle Aragon (Fabian), Jessica Streb (Aaron), Aron Thayer (Aaron), Josh Aragon (Adam), Alex Aragon (Adam); and great-grandchildren; Cinco, Gabi, Gregory, Noah and Landon; sisters: Polly Trujillo and Sally Gonzales.

A funeral mass will be conducted on Friday, December 15th, 2023 at 11am at the Immaculate Conception Church with Father Dennis Garcia as celebrant.

Cremation has taken place and interment will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Las Vegas, NM.
