Porfirio "Bear"
Perez Jr.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our cherished husband, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, Porfirio "Bear" Perez Jr., who passed away on March 17, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas, at the age of 74.
Porfirio Jr. was born to the late Porfirio Sr. and Margaret Perez in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Following his attendance at New Mexico State University, Porfirio Perez Jr. embarked on a 34-year political career, which included running for New Mexico Senate, serving as a Deputy Secretary for New Mexico General Services, and aiding Eddie Lopez in passing numerous tax-related legislation.
Porfirio Perez Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Porfirio Perez Sr., his mother Margaret Perez, his son Carlos Perez, his father-in-law, Ed Hern, mother-in-law, Erlinda "Ella" Hern and his brother-in-law, Joseph Hern.
Porfirio "Bear" Perez Jr. leaves behind his wife Wanda Hern to whom he was married to for 17 years, sister Cristina Shaus and her husband Mark of Texas, sister-in-law Gina Gurule of Las Vegas, NM, brother-in-law Norman Hern and his significant other Eppie of Las Vegas, and his longtime friend who was like a brother to him, Jame Chavez and his wife Berna. Porfirio leaves behind numerous family members including his nephews, nieces and cousins. Special appreciation is extended to his nurse Kersti Passig and her son Hardy, who brought cheer to his life, and acknowledged Marjorie and Olivia Maddux.
We would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Michael Lopez, Dr. Dan G. Shibuya, and Dr. Scott Stoerner for their dedication, outstanding support, and their exceptional care. Additionally, we appreciate the efforts of the BSA Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, his doctors, staff, nurses who made Porfirio's remaining time as comfortable as possible. Porfirio's boisterous voice was suited for singing traditional Mexican songs as a vocalist, and his creative side also extended to painting and drawing. He was known for his culinary skills, barbeque, cooking and served as a scorekeeper for SFIS Volleyball matches. A sports enthusiast, Porfirio particularly enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears, sharing movie nights with his wife, and engaging in crossword puzzles. His involvement in politics showcased his outgoing, intelligent, energetic and active nature.
The family requests your presence for the rosary, followed by the funeral services on Friday, April 24, 2026 at 9 am at Our Lady of Sorrows Church then interment will follow at San Jose Cemetery.
