Obituary

It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Rodney T. Clayton, our beloved son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Rodney, 69, was born in New Jersey to Harry and Conferina Clayton, raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico and graduating in 1974. After graduation Rodney enlisted in the Marines where he served for ten years. During that time, he was stationed in Japan, Yuma, and deployed to Vietnam during the war. He went on to receive his B.A. from Highlands University which led him to a career with the IRS, after 25 years Rodney proudly retired and went on to serve and help his fellow veterans at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe and Philadelphia. Rodney was a proud Marine and proud of his service to our country, he was also a proud dad. He had two children, Jennifer Clayton (Nichole) of South Dakota, Joshua Clayton with Darlene Gallegos (Frank Gallegos) and his beautiful granddaughter Brooklynn (Dakota) of Arkansas.

He is preceded in death by his son Joshua Clayton, his father Harry Clayton, grandmother Matilde Pena, grandfather, Eisabel Pena, and his beloved fur companions Max, Uno and Nico.

Rodney is survived by his daughter Jennifer Clayton, his mother Conferina Clayton, his brother Tom Clayton (Tina), sister Stella Clayton (Marie), granddaughter Brooklynn and his five grandkids, Jameson, Marlow, Goldie, Darling, and Lilly, and his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Everyone who knew Rodney would agree he was an interesting man full of stories and memories, with a stubborn spirit. His love for his family will live on in our hearts as we pull our strength from him. He was a lover of animals and history, especially family and New Mexico history. Rodney was so smart, you could talk to him about any subject, and he would happily talk to you for hours. He always had a way of making sense of this crazy world, it just came naturally to him. His voice had a way of carrying a magical tune with every memory or story he shared.

Rosary and Services will be recited on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 10:00am at Rogers Mortuary Chapel with a reception to follow at the VFW.
