Viola Wharton, age 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Albert, NM, on February 26, 1941, to Pablo Trujillo and Porfiria Montano.
Viola was a devoted Catholic whose faith guided her throughout her life. She was a vibrant and feisty woman with a wonderful sense of humor. A country girl at heart, she loved spending time outdoors especially in her garden tending to her flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed trips to the casino, where she always found excitement and laughter. Above all, her greatest joy in life was her family, whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Lesley “John” Wharton; her parents; her brothers Robert, Luisito, and Clarence; and her grandson, Michael Sevier. She was also preceded in death by several extended family members who held a special place in her heart.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana Montoya, and husband Chester; her son, Eloy A. Perea, and wife Rachel; her stepdaughters DeAnn and Paula; her sisters Mary Louise Vigil, Levina Martinez, Gloria Montoya Silva, and Julie Martinez; and her grandchildren Brian, Katrina, Donna, and Joey. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends whom she cherished deeply.
Rosary will be recited on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 1:00pm funeral mass will follow both services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mosquero, NM. Interment will follow at Mosquero Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Danny Apodaca, Leroy Gonzalez, Aaron Martinez, Robert Montoya, Gabe Montano, Freddy Trujillo, JR Gonzalez and Ace Gonzalez.
